A federal foundation for wildlife conservation: The evolution of the National Wildlife Refuge System, 1920–1968.

$49.99

This dissertation examines the growth and evolution of the National Wildlife Refuge System in the half century between the end of the Progressive Era and the beginning of the environmental movement. Best known today as a protector of endangered biological species, American policymakers originally institutionalized the refuge system in the 1920s to assist in the perpetuation of large-scale migratory waterfowl flights and attendant duck and goose hunting. This study begins by carefully reviewing the decade-long legislative fight for the original refuge system authorization, the Migratory Bird Conservation Act of 1929. Subsequent legislation, including the Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp (Duck Stamp) Act of 1934, Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration (Pittman-Robertson) Act of 1937, the Duck Stamp Act Amendments of 1949 and 1958, Refuge Recreation Act of 1962, and the National Wildlife Refuge System Administration Act of 1966 is contextualized within a four-decade effort to implement a waterfowl-centered refuge system.;By situating the gradual evolution of the refuge system from manager of migratory waterfowl to protector of endangered species within the legislative process, this study highlights the too often ignored congressional role in environmental policymaking. With a five-decade scope, it recognizes and analyzes continuities missed by more traditional accounts focused on presidential administrations. It also provides a much needed historical examination of the National Wildlife Refuge System, one of the four major public land system managed by the United States government, but largely ignored by historians, in the crucial historical evolution from conservation to environmentalism.

Excerpt: ‘Tis the Voice of the Lobster is a poem by Lewis Carroll that appears in Chapter 10 of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland . As recited by Alice to the Mock Turtle and the Gryphon , the first stanza describes a vain and stylish lobster who pretends not to fear sharks , but is in fact terrified by them. In the second stanza, an owl naively attempts to share a meat pie with a greedy panther . Although the poem’s final line is left incomplete, the owl’s unhappy fate is evident to the reader.Analysis “‘Tis the Voice of the Lobster” is a parody of “The Sluggard “, a moralistic poem by Isaac Watts which was well-known in Carroll’s day. “The Sluggard” depicts the unsavory lifestyle of a slothful individual as a negative example. Carroll’s lobster’s corresponding vice is that he is weak and cannot back up his boasts, and is consequently easy prey. This fits the pattern of the predatory parody poems in the two Alice books.Full text ‘Tis the voice of the Lobster: I heard him declare”You have baked me too brown, I must sugar my hair.”As a duck with its eyelids, so he with his noseTrims his belt and

I heard nothing except the scuttling off of the hyenas and jackals that had been attracted by the dead buffalo, so I slept again until daylight, when, to my surprise, I saw a dead leopard by the buffalo. He had come to the kill after the tiger had finished his meal. John H. Prentice. Big-Game Refuges Since the inception of the Boone and Crockett Club its plans and purposes have changed not a little. Originally organized for social purposes, for the encouragement of big-game hunting, and the procuring of the most effective weapons with which to secure the game, it has, little by little, come to be devoted to the broader object of benefiting this and succeeding generations by preserving a stock of large game. It is still made up of enthusiastic riflemen, and their love of the chase has not abated. But, since the Club’s formation, an astonishing change has come over natural conditions in the United States—a change which, fifteen or twenty years ago, could not have been foreseen. The extraordinary development of the whole Western country, with the inevitable contraction of the range of all big game, and the absolute reduction in the numbers of the game consequent on its destruction by skin hunters, head hunters and tooth hunters, has obliged the Boone and Crockett Club, in absolute self-defense, and in the hope that its efforts may save some of the species threatened with extinction, to turn its attention more and more togame protection. The Club was established in 1888. The buffalo had already been swept away. Since that date two species of elk have practically disappeared from the land, one being still represented by a few individuals which for some years have been preserved from destruction by a

American Game Bird Shooting encompasses seventeen chapters, each focusing on a particular species or group of similar birds. Each chapter, then, includes information not only on the natural history or biology of each but also various means of hunting them, plus appropriate hunting gear and accessories. Interestingly, the last chapter is titled Pigeons, Doves, Bitterns, Cranes, and Herons.Neither Bitterns nor Herons have been considered “game birds” for nearly a century and their taking is prohibited by Federal, State, and Provincial laws and regulations. Illustrations and interesting bits of information are scattered throughout the text. Murphy relates, for example, an instance where a market hunter sold his bag of Canada geese taken in a single day for several hundred dollars. Not bad, considering that laborer wages of the time were $1 to $2 a day. The book vividly reflects the author’s personal experiences over wide areas of the United States and his unusual powers of observation and skillful writing.–Henry M. Reeves.

 Animal Echolocation

Animal Echolocation

$68

Echolocation, also called biosonar, is the biological sonar used by several animals such as dolphins, shrews, most bats, and most whales. The term was coined by Donald Griffin, who was the first to conclusively demonstrate its existence in bats. Two bird groups also employ this system for navigating through caves, the so called cave swiftlets in the genus Aerodramus (formerly Collocalia) and the unrelated Oilbird Steatornis caripensis. Echolocating animals emit calls out to the environment and listen to the echoes of those calls that return from various objects in the environment. They use these echoes to locate, range, and identify the objects. Echolocation is used for navigation and for foraging (or hunting) in various environments.

Chora of Metaponto 2: Archaeozoology at Pantanello and Five Other Sites

$60

From 1974 to the present, the Institute of Classical Archaeology at the University of Texas at Austin has carried out archaeological excavations in the ancient territory (chora) of Metaponto, now located in the modern province of Basilicata on the southern coast of Italy. This wide-ranging investigation, which covers a number of sites and a time period ranging from prehistory to the Roman Empire, has unearthed a wealth of new information about the ancient rural economy in southern Italy. These discoveries will be published in a multi-volume series titled The Chora of Metaponto. This volume on archaeozoology—the study of animal remains from archaeological sites—is the second in the series, following The Chora of Metaponto: The Necropoleis (1998).Archaeozoology at Pantanello and Five Other Sites describes the animal remains found throughout Metaponto and discusses what they reveal about ancient practices of hunting and herding, domestication and importation of new breeds, people’s attitudes toward animals, and what animal remains indicate about past environments. A chapter devoted to bird bones, which are a relatively rare find because of their fragility, provides high quality information on the environment and methods of fowling, as well as on the beliefs and symbolism associated with birds. The final chapter covers tools—some simple, others sophisticated and richly decorated—made from animal bones.

Excerpt: DromornisBarawertornisBullockornisIlbandornisGenyornis Dromornithidae the dromornithids were a family of large, flightless Australian birds of the Oligocene through Pleistocene epochs. All are now extinct. They were long classified in the order Struthioniformes, but are now usually classified as a family of Anseriformes. Their closest living relatives are waterfowl such as ducks and geese. Dromornithids were part of the Australian megafauna; one species Dromornis stirtoni was 3 metres tall and may have been the largest bird that ever lived. The collective term “Australian megafauna” is used to describe a number of comparatively large species of animals that lived in Australia until 50,000 to 20,000 years ago. The causes for the disappearance of these animals are under dispute (see “Extinction” below). It is also not clear to what degree dromornithids were carnivores. The massive, crushing beaks of some species suggest that at least some members of the family were a combination of carnivorous predators and scavengers (much like today’s hyenas) or omnivores. Other features, such as the “hoof-like” feet, stomach structure, and eye structure that resulted in a wide field of vision but likely also created a centre blind spot of about forty degrees (which would hinder hunting significantly) suggest a more herbivorous, migratory lifestyle. The scientific name Dromornithidae derives from Greek dromaios (“swift-running”) and ornis (“bird”). Additionally, the family has been called Thunder birds, giant emus, giant runners, demon ducks and Mihirungs. The latter word is derived from Chaap Wuurong (Tjapwuring) mihirung paringmal for a “giant emu”. The name used in this article, dromornithids, is derived from the family name. Dromornithid… More:

Enjoying Virginia Outdoors: A Guide to Wildlife Management Areas

$18.95

Most outdoor enthusiasts in Virginia have hiked, camped, paddled, hunted, or fished in the state’s many parks, refuges, and other public lands, from the barrier islands to the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, but few know about another wonderful resource, the Commonwealth’s wildlife management areas. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries maintains twenty-nine of these areas. From the 5,574-acre Saxis wildlife management area on the Eastern Shore to the 25,477-acre Clinch Mountain wildlife management area deep in Southwest Virginia—180,000 acres in all—the areas provide excellent sport for anglers and hunters. Hunting seasons in Virginia are relatively short, however, and during the remainder of the year, the wildlife management areas offer plenty of opportunity for other activities: camping, backpacking, hiking, bird-watching and nature viewing, mountain biking, horseback riding, or just relaxing in an outdoor environment. An avid sportsman known to Virginians for his guides to the outdoors, Bob Gooch covers the many recreational possibilities available to everyone in these wildlife management areas. Arranged in five geographical sections, Enjoying Virginia Outdoors includes maps and specific information for each area. Many have nature-viewing platforms or towers for use by the public. Although the wildlife management programs are directed toward game animals, all wildlife benefits. The areas boast over 650 species of fauna, including an especially wide variety of birds and an impressive array of flora. The wildlife management areas require no fee or permit; all you need to use this wonderful resource is a healthy respect for the land and the wild creatures that live there, and a copy of Enjoying Virginia Outdoors.s

Healing Grove: African Tree Remedies and Rituals for the Body and Spirit

$10.88

Reclaiming traditions based on plants and herbs has never been more important than it is today. Widespread use of chemicals, hormones, and additives introduce unknown substances into our bodies. On a larger scale, our future on the planet depends on our ability and willingness to incorporate earth-friendly practices into daily life. Where better to look for natural remedies and soothing rituals than Africa? It is, after all, the Mother Continent, allegedly the birthplace of the entire human race, and the keeper of ancient earth knowledge. No newcomer to these traditions, Stephanie Rose Bird explores the practical uses, spiritual traditions, and historical aspects of trees in the heritage of African Americans and offers ways to rediscover and implement natural practices in twenty-first-century daily life. The topics she covers are as diverse as a wood should be, including everything from hunting, gathering, and processing to natural divination, omens, signs, and forest medicine for wellness and beauty. A Healing Grove will lead not only to personal healing but also to a lifestyle that will heal our earth.

Mammals And Birds Of Dihang-Dibang Biosphere Reserve, North-East India

Mammals And Birds Of Dihang-Dibang Biosphere Reserve, North-East India

$66.99

This is the first such work on this region of high biodiversity in Eastern Himalaya-Mishmi Hills in northeastern India. Besides two flying squirrels of the genus Petaurista, which are new to science, a number of other significant mammal and bird records have been made. Blue-and-white Flycatcher and Gongshan Muntjac have been reported for the first time in India. The Leaf Muntjac as well as several species of galliformes were found to be widespread in and around the reserve. Small numbers of Tiger and Snow Leopard still occur in the area. At least 100 species of mammals and 312 species of birds have been listed. The area still has some fine natural habitats and perhaps several unrecorded small mammalian species, especially rodents. Poachers from Tibet (China) are a major threat in addition to normal conservation issues of habitat loss, hunting and developmental activities. Musk Deer (all species) and Black Bear are high on poachers’ agenda. Extension of the reserve up to India-China border as well as towards west (Mechuka area) and east (Chaglagam area) are strongly recommended.

Excerpt: Auckland Islands Merganser The Auckland Islands Merganser , Mergus australis , was a typical merganser which is now extinct. This duck was similar in size to the Red-breasted Merganser . The adult male had a dark reddish-brown head, crest and neck, with bluish black mantle and tail and slate grey wings. The female was slightly smaller with a shorter crest. This bird was first collected when a French expedition led by the explorer Jules Dumont d’Urville on the ships L’Astrolabe and La Zelee visited the Auckland Islands in 1840. Its decline was caused by a combination of hunting and predation by introduced mammals . The bird was not flightless, but rather hard to flush; it preferred to hide between rocks when pursued. The last sighting was of a pair shot on January 9, 1902. It was not found in a 1909 search, and a thorough 1972/1973 exploration of possible habitat concluded that it was long extinct (Williams

In these edgy, elegant poems, Éireann Lorsung seeks balance in her world between the need for permanence and the heady seductiveness of the moment. Her intuitive knowledge of poetic form (line breaks, enjambment, repetition, punctuation) and her strong poetic voice channel some of the genre’s greats while remaining distinctive. From the prayer-like musicality of “All Through the Night,” to the visually dynamic “Oceanside,” to the theatrical “Bird Woman, Duck Hunting,” these poems exhibit a visceral creativity that establishes the author as a major new voice in the field.

Excerpt: Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge, a part of the Chesapeake Marshlands National Wildlife Refuge Complex, is a 2,286-acre island located at the confluence of the Chester River and the Chesapeake Bay. Established in 1962 as a sanctuary for migratory birds, Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge provides natural habitat for over 240 bird species including bald eagles and transitory peregrine falcons and is a major staging site for tundra swans. The refuge comprises the entirety of Eastern Neck Island, projecting into a bend of the Chester River. The island was one of the first settled places in Maryland, where Major Joseph Wickes was granted 800 acres in 1650 and built the now-vanished “Wickliffe” mansion. A view to the south from the Duck Inn trail. The island was visited in precolonial times by Woodland period Native Americans, who left shell middens, arrowheads and pottery behind. From 1658 to 1680, Joseph Wickes and his parrtner Thomas Hynson assembled the entire island under their ownership, farming the land. Captain Lambert Wickes, Joseph’s great grandson and captain of the USS Reprisal is memorialized with a monument on the site of Wickliffe. The island was owned by the Wickes until 1902, who continued to raise a variety of crops on the land. After 1902 portions of the island became hunting preserves. In the 1920’s, wealthy individuals from surrounding cities were attracted by the waterfowl concentrations and bought portions of the island … More:

Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests and subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. It is threatened by habitat loss. The Owls are the order Strigiformes, comprising 200 extant bird of prey species. Most are solitary, and nocturnal, with some exceptions (e.g. the Northern Hawk Owl). Owls hunt mostly small mammals, insects, and other birds, though a few species specialize in hunting fish. They are found in all regions of the Earth except Antarctica, most of Greenland, and some remote islands. Though owls are typically solitary, the literary collective noun for a group of owls is a parliament. Living owls are divided into two families: the typical owls, Strigidae; and the barn-owls, Tytonidae.

Outdoors Year Round: A Guide to Fishing and Hunting in Coastal Virginia and North Carolina

Outdoors Year Round: A Guide to Fishing and Hunting in Coastal Virginia and North Carolina

$1.99

To the west is a stretch of Interstate 95 running from the D.C. suburbs to the South Carolina state line. To the east is the Atlantic Ocean. What lies in between, a four-hundred-mile stretch of coastal country traversing Virginia and North Carolina, is home to some of the best hunting and fishing grounds on the East Coast. For the first time, those who love to hunt and fish this unique area have a book. In Outdoors Year Round Stephen Ausband looks at an uncommonly rich spectrum of outdoor opportunities. Readers will delight in accounts of night fishing in Pamlico Sound, surf casting at Chincoteague, and bottom fishing in Chesapeake Bay. Ausband also covers large and small game, including numerous waterfowl and upland bird hunts, deer hunting tips for both rifle and bow hunters, and the pleasures of tracking bear with a practiced guide. The book is laid out chronologically, its twelve chapters covering each of the twelve months, from duck hunting in January to fishing for gray trout at Christmastime. Each chapter features two trips that allow the reader to take full advantage of what each month has to offer. These custom itineraries, which include complete traveling instructions and pricing information, outline exceptional hunting and fishing opportunities that do not strain the pocketbook. But Ausband provides more than just great practical advice. He also relates his personal experiences as an avid outdoorsman, one who has heard the howl of the red wolf near the Alligator River and flushed black ducks on the Eastern Shore—as well as his thoughts on introducing newcomers, particularly young people, to the diversity of life in the tidal zone. This is a book sportsmen will reach for, month in and month out. With Outdoors Year Round, there is no off-season.

Playing with Fish: And Other Lessons from the North

Playing with Fish: And Other Lessons from the North

$0.99

According to the Yup’ik Eskimo of Alaska, fish are not to be played with. It’s an adage instilled in children that’s as basic as looking both ways before crossing the street, but at its heart lies a concern for nature. Yup’ik traditions are tested each generation by this people’s struggle for survival, the admonition not to play with fish has been further tested by the arrival of sport fishing from the south. Worlds are colliding—whose will emerge unscathed? Robert J. Wolfe, a cultural anthropologist from California, spent twenty years in Alaska documenting the traditional hunting and fishing practices of Alaska Natives. During that northern sojourn he discovered much about sustainable relationships between people and nature and about the basis of meaningful communities. In Playing with Fish he has crafted a series of thought-provoking essays on nature, culture, and the human condition that convey unsuspected lessons from the North. In contrasting California and Alaska—worlds far apart yet connected by peoples, cultural traditions, and ecology—Wolfe not only draws distinctions between compass points, he also conveys memorable stories about nature and life. He depicts bears and humans as both neighbors and ancient adversaries, and how cultural views about bears can destroy or preserve those relationships. He shows us Alaskan villages where security is found not in locks but in neighbors, unlike electronically sealed suburban California homes, their lawns studded with security signs. And he describes the peaceful resolution of conflict between California bird hunters and Eskimos of the Bering Sea coast over declining geese numbers, where small humanizing acts tipped the balance in favor of cooperation. Blending insights into subjects as diverse as music and chaos theory, Wolfe challenges readers to reflect on their own personal conduct within nature and within our multicultural world. Playing with Fish is a

Tourism and the Consumption of Wildlife

Tourism and the Consumption of Wildlife

$180

Consumptive forms of wildlife tourism (hunting, shooting and fishing) have become a topic of interest – both to the tourism industry, in terms of destinations seeking to establish or grow this sector, and to other stakeholders such as environmental organisations, animal-rights groups, and the general public. Hunting tourism, in particular, has come under fire with accusations that it is contributing to the demise of some species. Practices such as canned hunting (within fenced safari parks) or the use of hounds are described as unethical, and fishing tourism too has attracted recent negative publicity as it is said to be cruel. At the same time, however, many peripheral and indigenous communities around the world are strategising how to capitalise on consumptive forms of wildlife tourism. This book addresses a range of contentious issues facing the consumptive wildlife tourism sector across a number of destinations in Europe, North America, Africa, India, Arabia and Oceania. Practices such as baited bear hunting, trophy hunting of threatened species, and hunting for conservation are debated, along with the impact of this type of tourism on indigenous communities and on wider societies. Research on all aspects of consumptive wildlife tourism is included, which for the purposes of the book is defined to include all tourism that involves the intended killing of wildlife for sport purposes, and may include the harvest of wildlife products. This includes, among others, recreational hunting, big-game hunting and safari operations, traditional/indigenous hunting, game-bird shooting, hunting with hounds, freshwater angling and saltwater game fishingetc. This is the first book to specifically address tourist aspects of consumption of wildlife. It will appeal to tourism and recreation academics and students, tourism industry operators, community tourism planners and wildlife managers.

IN WHICH A MAN DECEIVES A WOMAN. In Benares once reigned a mighty prince, by name Pratapamukut, to whose eighth son Vajramukut happened the strangest adventure. One morning, the young man, accompanied by the son of his father’s pradhan or prime minister, rode out hunting, and went far into the jungle. At last the twain unexpectedly came upon a beautiful ” tank1″ of a prodigious size. It was surrounded by short thick walls of fine baked brick ; and flights and ramps of cut-stone steps, half the length of each face, and adorned with turrets, pendants, and finials, led down to the water. The substantial plaster work and the masonry had fallen into disrepair, and from the crevices sprang huge trees, under whose thick shade the breeze blew freshly, and on whose balmy branches the birds sang sweetly; the grey squirrels2 chirruped joyously as they coursed one another up the gnarled trunks, and from the pendent llianas the long- tailed monkeys were swinging sportively. The bountiful hand of Sravana8 had spread the earthen rampart with a carpet of the softest grass and many-hued wild flowers, inwhich were buzzing swarms of bees and myriads of bright- winged insects; and flocks of water fowl, wild geese, Brahmini ducks, bitterns, herons, and cranes, male and female, were feeding on the narrow strip of brilliant green that belted the long deep pool, amongst the broad-leaved lotuses with the lovely blossoms, splashing through the pellucid waves, and basking happily in the genialsun. i A pond, natural or artificial; in the latter case often covering an extent of ten to twelve acres. 2. Wedge-tailed Eagle

Wedge-tailed Eagle

$105.12

Australia’s Wedge-tailed Eagle belongs to the family of eagles, which together span the world. Eagles are powerful predators, with exceptional powers of flight and sight. They may kill to survive, but they also sleep, play, enjoy a bath, make tender parents, and form lasting relationships. This book gives a comprehensive overview of Australia’s largest true eagle and one of the country’s few large predators and scavengers. First appearing in Aboriginal rock-paintings more than 5000 years ago, the Wedge-tailed Eagle was little more than a curiosity to the early European settlers. The book traces the subsequent changes in perception—from its branding as a vicious sheep killer to an iconic species worthy of conservation—and covers distribution, habitat, hunting, relationships, reproduction and chick development. A final section deals with threats to the existence of this magnificent bird.

 Wren Day

Wren Day

$50.99

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Wren day also known as Wren’s day, Hunt the Wren Day or The Hunting of the Wrens (Irish: Lá an Dreoilín) celebrated on 26 December, St. Stephen’s Day, on the Isle of Man, Ireland, Wales and Newfoundland. The tradition consists of “hunting” a fake wren, and putting it on top of a decorated pole. Then the crowds of mummers or strawboys celebrate the Wren (also pronounced as the Wran) by dressing up in masks, straw suits and colourful motley clothing and, accompanied by traditional céilí music bands, parade through the towns and villages in remembrance of a festival that was celebrated by the Druids. These crowds are sometimes called wrenboys. In past times, an actual bird was hunted by Wrenboys on St. Stephen’s Day. The captured wren was tied to the Wrenboy leader’s staff pole, sometimes dead, sometimes alive (to be killed after the parade). The parade song, of which there are many variations, asked for donations from the townspeople.
